In his work at the United Nations, Mr. Ignacio Socias has witnessed a consistent pattern of unexpected poverty: one however that is not of material wealth but of true family time and genuine family life.
Worldwide, it seems, people hunger for the simple riches that come from being around the family table more than from what may or may not be served at table. They hunger, in other words, for the joy of being with one another. The worst kind of poverty we face today is little or no time for family togetherness. This is true from the most prosperous nations to the developing world.
The family that spends time together leads each of its members to personal growth in human and spiritual maturity, cultural depth, civic responsibility and a sense of solidarity. A united family is indeed what instills the “human in humanity,” thereby building a healthy society. And, as a reflection of the Holy Trinity, the Christian family points each culture towards God’s plan for it.
In his keynote address, Mr. Socias will help us to see how investing time and thought in our own family is of fundamental importance not only for ourselves, but for all of society.
